The time has arrived! In a matter of 9 hours, a brand new Miss Hong Kong will be crowned! A lot of fans have mentioned that the pageant is generating less and less interest. I am very grateful that TVB is still hosting it even if the pageant is no longer as grand and extravagant as it used to be. It is a tradition of Hong Kong as well as a part of Chinese culture. The pageant has experienced a lot of highs and lows over the years, just like the recent events in Hong Kong. May peace be restored to Hong Kong as soon as possible.
This year is one of the most competitive years I’ve seen in a while! It has to be the hardest predictions I’ll make as the batch seems to be very evenly matched. Unlike the past successful predictions of Hera, Crystal, Louisa, and Grace winning the title, there is no clear winner this year and each girl has her strengths and weaknesses. And to complicate matters, the winner and runner ups will be chosen via public vote!! This will make the results even more interesting.
Let me begin by highlighting my thoughts of each contestant and then narrowing it down from there.
Contestant #1 Carmaney Wong
One of the big favorites since day 1, she seems to be a safe bet among the press, TVB artistes, and Pageant fans. She has the pageant experience having represented HK at Miss International 2018 (one of the big three international pageants in the world). She possesses a Miss HK aura by the way she speaks and is very calm in front of the camera. My biggest concern is her talent (ukelete - not very appealing) and some have noted her teeth is an distraction. Other than that, she seems to be a shoo-in for top 5 and very likely top 3.
She was appointed in a casting to represent HK at Miss International, will she formally win the Miss Hong Kong title? We’ll find out tonight.
Contestant #2 Kayan Choi
Kayan is a KOL and has a lot of supporters online voting for her. She has one of the prettier faces this year and is very eloquent in interviews. I had her in my top 3 at one point in time. She has been in-and-out of my list though because she seems to lack that Miss HK aura. Maybe it’s the way she speaks(?). She also received a lot of negative criticism (as with some other girls) so this is one of my concerns. Her talent was also not too appealing (model dressing) so this is also a question mark. We’ll see if her wit, beauty, and online supporters hold her up.
Contestant #3 Maggie Leung
Maggie is one of the most polarizing contestants among the Baidu pageant forums. Many criticize her beauty, particularly her eyes. Facially she is not as strong as the other ladies. Many are surprised why she made top 10. But, I understand why she keeps on advancing. She eludes a Miss HK aura - the way she speaks and the smile she gives. Her piano talent is arguably one of the strongest and best among the top 10 contestants. If her beauty was stronger, I’m sure a lot more people will have her in the top 3 (I certainly will rank her higher). She can surprise and make top 5 (like #15 Tania from last year’s pageant), but Hong Kongers are still beauty-conscious and Maggie will likely be overlooked tonight. We’ll see her put up a fight though for sure!
Contestant #4 Vivian Lu
I think Vivian is one of the most overlooked contestants this year. Her negative press has got her some attention though but she doesn’t seem to stand out in this year’s batch. Her lotita talent was eye-catching and decent but she is one of long shots this year. I think it will be a challenge for her to make top 5 but let’s see if TVB favors her. She tied with #6 Blossom for Miss Friendship and lost out in the tie breaker round.
Contestants #5 Fei Wong
Will the popular name give her an edge over the TVB artistes and general public and win her votes?? I think she has one of the prettier faces this year. Her dancing talent was eye-catching and decent. She resembles a little like Rebecca Zhu, Miss Hong Kong 2011. I think this will gain her votes. She gained the press status of top 3 after the swimsuit rehearsal yesterday and TVB seems to like this type of contestant. My concern is her height. She also mentioned that she is not very witty and eloquent and this may affect her interview. We’ll she how she does. She has been in-and-out of my top 5.
