The time has come again!! Time seems to pass so quickly... just less than 9 hrs away from the finals and I'm still typing up my predictions here. Honestly, there has been so little coverage of the pageant this year that I can't really evaluate the girls deeply. Viewers can only rely on Baidu and Big Big Channel.. Some fans are already worrying that the pageant may not make its 50th year.. Let's hope the pageant continues even if it is not as grand and extravagant as it used to be..
Let's talk about each girl one at a time before making up my mind (I haven't really). These are just my comments.
1. Regina
I think she has one of the best faces in the pageant. Very articulate and poised, I think she'll do well. Her height is her main disadvantage but it's an open field, she stands a good chance.
2. Katarina
She has an interesting name, sounds different from Katrina. I think she resembles Miss Chinese Toronto 2015. She doesn't seem to be from the Mainland though. She wasn't really on my radar but considering she was one of the top 3 contestants in the Taiwan training/filming, she can't be looked over entirely.
3. Sandy
I think she has a beautiful face. She also seems to speak quite well. However.. she is the shortest girl this year and sorta blends into the background.
4. Emily
I think she has a radiant smile. She was a darkhorse initially but after seeing her in the swimsuit rehearsal (in BBC live), I thought she looked great! Great body and confident, I think she can pull off a surprise. Cantonese is her main disadvantage.
5. Juliette
One of the most polarizing contestants this year. A lot of Baidu fans think she has one of the least attractive faces. I did discount her after preliminary interviews but when I saw her in the Taiwan series, I was impressed. She had a great transformation and really sit out for her height and western features. She also has one of the best bodies this year. I think she stands out and can end up placing really high. Cantonese is her main disadvantage.
6. Mandy
Mandy has one of the cutest faces this year. She seems more relaxed since the days of the preliminary interviews. Her smile seems more natural and she looks great (she lost 10+ lbs). Her main disadvantage is her age and education though. TVB values both factors a lot. At 17, I think Mandy should've waited a few more years. I believe the last Miss HK without a college degree would be Mandy Cho in 2003 (she was 20 back then, alt. Rebecca Zhu of 2011 graduated from a dancing school) and the last 18 yr old to win Miss HK is Lee San San in 1996! (Please see: www.misshongkongpageant.com/mhkage.htm)
While we almost crowned a 19 yr old Miss HK last yr (And almost the youngest Mr. HK and btw, I still think Karl should've won!!), it seems like we may not see a young contestant win in the near future. It will be an uphill battle. Of course, we have had a number of 18 yr olds win MsHK and they were stunning winners (Loletta Chu, Michelle Reis).
7. Suki
Standing at 5'10", she's the tallest contestant this year, I think she would be a big favorite if her facial beauty was stronger. She has more of a mature look. I think she has more of a skinny body alt. the press thinks she looks on-point in yesterday's swimsuit rehearsal. Her height and model background are her strong points.
8. Kelly
The big favorite, I think she has all the qualities of a winner. Height, language, looks, and popularity, I think there won't be too much disapproval if she wins. However, there are some Baidu fans that dislike her.. I think the real concern is Kelly's speaking skills. She has a great voice but doesn't seem as sharp as #1 Regina. And, she seems a little tired at times.. I think she looked not as tired in the swimsuit rehearsals though (contrary to what the press says. They say she is at risk of not makign the top 3). We'll see how she performs.
9. Nicole
People say she has a lot of fans in Big Big Channel so we'll see if she can win the Most Popular Contestant in BBC. I think she resembles a lot of people - Tracy Ip (MsHK 2005), Elva Ni (MCT 2005), and Daisy (MsHK 2016 #4). She looks great at some angles but then not as sharp at other times. And, she seems to be reserved in interviews (maybe because of her personality??). I think she's a darkhorse though, we'll see how she does.
10. Boanne
Younger sister of Bowie Cheung, Miss Friendship 2016, I think she is not as sharp as Bowie. She has dimples and looks cute but her speaking skills doesn't seem to be as sharp as the others. I think she resembles Shirley Yeung (2001), so we'll see if she can do as well as Shirley did. Her background will get her attention.
