It's the time of year again! This year we have a record low number of girls.. 14. I would say this year is the least competitive year since 2009 but the HK press believes it's one of the high quality years (height wise we do have al but 2 girls standing at 5'6" or higher).
It's unfortunate many cities have lost interest in the pageant. I'll write a detailed article later on about the pageant. Let me post my final thoughts and predictions of the pageant first.
The press favorites include: #3 (hometown girl and education), 9 (figure and big eyes), 12 (some say she is Christy Chung look-alike alt. I don't get the hype), and 14 (who I picked to win Vancouver. She does look like Michelle Reis at some angles). The evident favorite seems to be the Belgian-Chinese mix Jennifer of Vancouver. She has a great body, strong sash, and a beautiful face. The only things that will hold her back will be her language barrier and actually the judges. Why?? Instead of the traditional 5 judging panel, we have 26 judges his year. Twenty of them are former beauty queens. Based on the 2012 selection of Miss Photogenic (with a shocking Jennifer Shum winning), I can see the female judges not picking Jennifer. Taking the jealousy factor aside, I can see Vancouver easily winning their seventh title. Usually, I dislike Vancouver winning (I never really got most of their winners except Bernice, Shirley, and later Linda), the others I thought were kinda lucky and won based on weak competition/good training. If Jennifer wins though, it will be well deserved (alt. we can say she did benefit from a rather weak field).
New York - she was a dark horse when winning Miss NY Chinese (I'm inclined to call her the winner of "Miss Chinese 2015") because the winner does represent "New York" after all. She didn't make the talent top 5 in NY.. Which is quite unusual since most of the winners made the talent top 5. She broke odds though and proven many critics wrong. I think she has big eyes and a good figure (alt. there is a little pouch). I know she has strong interview skills and an impressive education as well. I expect her to continue NY's strong record since 2014. Top 3? It can happen but I can see her not making it as well.
Hong Kong - so she did signed with TVB! I was thinking if she didn't, she wouldn't make top 3 but now I can say yes. Louisa also won MSHK in a rather weak field but it's different now, I don't think she'll pull it off. Top 3? Possible.
Sydney - I don't think she looks beautiful alt. Some really like her. She also has some negative press going around about her partying. Alt. I don't think this will impact her largely, I don't think she is Hong Konger's cup of tea. And.. Sydney also won last year so a back-to-back seems to be less likely (even Leanne's win in 2005 seems to be a little ridiculous...). And yes, it's still shocking how the city managed to win last year. I was not impressed at all with her answers, it was basically flattering the hosts (aka, polishing their shoes). On top of that, Mandy doesn't have the winners look. Her victory is considered to be one of the most shocking victories in MCI history (check Baidu forums). No wonder TVB didn't sign her (the last time this occurred was in 2006!!). And mind you, she wasn't suppose to even compete in Miss Chinese Australia!! The accountants made a mistake and allowed her to compete although she didn't finish second in the Sydney preliminaries!! Hmm.. Something fishy going on.
Johannesburg - I think she has a refreshing look but I worry about her interview skills.
Kuala Lumpur - she has great interview skills and training but.. Malaysia seems to be struggling to crown facial beauties. No wonder the big Malaysian fan base and Baidu fans are not supporting KL. It seems like after the stunning Lenna Lim, the city hasn't crowned beautiful winners. I can see her making top 5 though but KL has another big problem - TALENT. For some reason, Astro cannot come together with a entertaining talent for their girls. This is one of the reasons why they lost in 2014 and 2015. As for 2013.. I would say their rep. received high marks in other fields so that's why they still managed to place higher than HK.
Nanjing - she actually has a beautiful face and height! But.. We know TVB is not interested in girls with Mainland backgrounds. The only time a Mainland city made the cut was in 2008 (and the girl was chosen from a TVB competition).
Auckland - she looks pretty at first but lost some spark after arriving. We're see if her talent and interview can bring her into the final 5. Too bad we won't have a top 8 or 10 cut. I guess TVB didn't want to do so since there's 14 girls this year... Hmm.. But they had a cut to 8 in MSHK 2015 and cut to 14 in MCI 2014!?!??
Toronto - not seeing it. Toronto seems to be missing their marks since Candy Cheung in 2010. Her hairstyle and figure are her main disadvantages.
Singapore - I had her to win Miss Friendship but.. Eventually my second pick won. I think she speaks well but facially, many feel she is the least attractive this year.
Los Angeles - I like her personality!! She has a great smile and if there was a cut to 10 or 8, she may have made it. However.. Since there isn't, I don't see her making it. Her figure is her main disadvantage alt. I'm happy she won Miss Friendship. She had a mishap before where she forgot her dance steps and simply laughed on stage....... Hope she remembers her steps tonight.
Bangkok - another fair representative the city has sent. She looks better in motion than in photos. She can pull off a surprise.
Melbourne - same situation as Auckland.
Montreal - there other mix in this pageant, her facial features are not as strong as Vancouver though. Some critics thought she would be a press favorite but I didn't think so. TVB.com says she speaks Cantonese so it'll be interesting to see her interview. She has a good figure and height though. Possible dark horse.
My final picks to come next!!
