After such a long wait, Miss Universe 2014 will be held next Sunday!!! Here are my thoughts on the presentation show last night.
I wish the winners of the special awards were announced (hopefully they will be in the finals unlike 2013). The MCs did a credible job. The stage can look better but the pageant ran smooth even though the official website had some glitches and I missed the girls introduce themselves...
After rewatching the introductions later, I feel the girls with the best faces are Guyana, Serbia, France, and Spain. Venezuela looks a little chubby and I wished she looked like the night when she won Miss Venezuela. The other girls looked okay but facially, I think we don't have a very strong year.
Onto evening gowns. I scored each girl and most of them fell between 8.3-8.7. Colombia had too much make up on. She looked very white... China could've picked a better gown. So as Argentina. Some really like Australia alt. I think she is the facially weakest Miss Australia since 2010 (who still made it to 2nd RU that year). Costa Rica did a nice turn in the end. Dominican Rep. had a unique gown, made me think of the 90s but it fit her nicely.
Ethiopia co-designed her gown and I thought it looked beautiful! Her presentation was good and I gave her a high mark. She was one of the standouts tonight. I wanted to include her in my top 16 for the pageant predictions contest but left her out at the last moment because of her sash......
France was a little underwhelming (lacked some energy) and Guyana looked stunning! Simple gown but she didn't overdo the presentation. I think Guyana may have finally earned their first placement! India's gown was ok and Jamaica's catwalk was good but... I honestly don't get why many like her. She looks quite manly in short hair.
Indonesia had a good gown. Good surprise. So as Kazakhstan! Good gown and I just wish her sash gets overlooked. She looks exotic and alt. I don't have her in my predictions' list, I have her on my personal list.
Philippines was a little short and the gown made her seem stumpy... I still put her and Jamaica on my list for the predictions' contest just because of the hype. I wouldn't be surprised though if both countries fail to advance on Sunday. Philippines is actually sending the weakest rep. since 2009 (I actually prefer 2009's rep. than Mary Jean).
Serbia has a stunning face but her gown choice did make me sigh.... It was unique but in a bad way. The color seemed off for a Miss Universe pageant. I wish she changes her gown if she makes the cut. I still have her on my list though because she is simply beautiful.
South Africa looked very elegant in white. I like how her and many other girls set their hair into a bun just like Leila and Olivia. Then comes Spain! What a face!!! So glad she fixed her teeth. I wish her gown presentation can be more powerful but it's a safe choice and she wins this portion of the competition for me.
Russia looked ok... Ukraine also looks like Russia (almost same styling and gown color!) but I like Ukraine more. USA follows in red (indeed!!) and again displays a laid-back presentation similar to the one she gave at USA. She actually reminds me of Olivia alt. I prefer Olivia facially. Lastly is Venezuela. Good gown but she looks a little chubby. Her catwalk could've been better.
Onto swimsuits. Even though I have watched Miss Universe for many years, I'm still trying to figure out what constitutes as a good body and which is a poor body. I thought many of the girls didn't have a solid body (is that right??) and some seemed like they didn't go to the gym.
Overall, the ones that I thought stood out in gown also stood out in swimsuit. Except for... Colombia - her body is a little weird, something is sticking out of her mid section (??). Venezuela, which is usually a country that dominates in this portion of the pageant surprisingly looks a little unfit. Her body is definitely not what I expect from VZ. Same as to 2014's VZ rep. to Miss International.
Philippines also doesn't have the tall lean body Venus Raj or 2013's rep. had.
Spain showed more energy here. I didn't think the tattoo was that much a distraction. Dominican Rep. gave a good presentation. Ethiopia continued to impress me here and I won't be surprised if she does make the cut. South Africa was decent. Guyana continues to impress. I was afraid she would've given a low energy presentation but she had good stage presence!! Good job Guyana!!
The relatively poor bodies go to.... British Virgin Islands, Georgia (she looks very white...), Bulgaria (same issue as Georgia), and Slovenia (her walk was not good). Actually I think there are other poor bodies but I can't really tell the difference except if there is a little belly sticking out and most of the girls looked skinny.
I liked how some girls let their hair down. Turks & Caicos, Russia, and Ukraine look better that way in swimsuit.
Will post my top 16 predictions' list and top 15 personal list soon. But, after viewing the preliminaries and following them for so long, I think Miss Universe will likely come from Spain, France, Colombia, Venezuela (I doubt it will happen but after last year, I don't count out Venezuela), USA (hometown advantage, radiant smile), Guyana (if Leila did it, so can Guyana!), and Serbia (she needs to change her gown though).
Out of the countries not listed above and are board favorites - Philippines, Australia, and India may get the call but will not win Miss Universe.
