Want to share with everybody my thoughts on this year's pageant.
First, the introductions were done too slow. I liked when they spoke in the microphones or do a runway intro. like MUO. It took like forever for them to finish.
Afterwards, they announced the top 15. As a non-follower of MAO, I got a few choices right which I'm already satisfied since MA is always unpredictable. Not too surprised that DC and VA got left out since Allyn was also excluded last year. Hope MAO considers time constraints next time bec. announcing the remaining 2 semifinalists along with the other 13 is much better.
Swimsuits were nice and the walk was simple (like past years). I wish Mississippi advanced. She may not have shown a lot of energy with her walk but that body was better than others in the top 12. She stood out and was actually #1 in swimsuit for me (if Russia 2010 scored #11 out of 15, she should've at least made top 12). Further considering she won prelim swimsuit makes her exclusion more surprising.
Onto evening gowns. Not much standout gowns except for Kansas (who many pointed out is Cassidy's gown @ Teen). CA looked confidence in her gown and so as NY, so they were the standouts here. Florida actually ranked last in this round for me even though I had her as a favorite while watching the 20-20 documentary.
Onto talent. Again, New York stood out tremendously! Once she danced on her knees and after the host said, "incredible," I knew she led this round. I told my younger brother, "back-to-back is possible!" California's ballet dance was also elegantly performed and added many points since many contestants sang this year. Compared to past years, I thought this year's talent competition wasn't as entertaining. I guess not every year's contestants are talented?
Onto the top 5 question. I believe I had 4 out of 5 correct (or maybe all 5 correct). Minnesota was the finalist I didn't really get until talent. She kept on advancing to 12 and then to 10 and ultimately, I knew the judges loved her. Not surprised at her making top 5 but at the same time not surprised at her 4th runner up placement (I kept on thinking she would be eliminated in the next round lol).
Out of all the top 5 answers, I thought New York answered the best, followed by California, Minnesota (even though I didn't get her question or answer), Oklahoma (beauty + talent + strong sash really helped her), and Florida.
At first, I thought Florida was rushed to leave bec. ABC was running over-time but after when I re-watched that round, she did took a long time answering the question.... hence, her lower placement was understandable.
New York delivered with confidence and had no pause words (hmm, uhh) and nailed her question. After hearing her answer, I knew back-to-back was pretty much fulfilled. California also fought her way through a tough question.
Then came the final results. Unlike Miss USA, I didn't get all the placements correct. I only had NY and CA and had FL as 3rd, Minnesota as 4th, and OK as 5th.
When they were down to the final 2, I was really excited. I HONESTLY WANTED BOTH OF THEM TO WIN. If only they competed in different years... As a Chinese American, I wanted to see Crystal Lee become the first Chinese American to win MA. However, as a fellow New Yorker, I wanted to see NY win (it would also be back-to-back then!).
In the end, I wanted NY over CA and indeed NY is declared the winner. Well deserved victory overall since Nina excelled in talent, swimsuit, evening gown, and final question. Also congratulations to CA since she showed many people Chinese Americans can do well at Miss America. At one point in time, I thought she would win over NY since she is well educated and intelligent (Standford graduate!!). Oklahoma also placed in the top 3 again and shows pageant fans that they're a powerhouse at MAO.
Overall, the production of the pageant could be well. Some airtime can be used properly (instead of introducing that general???). BTW, does anybody think the pageant was a little rushed? Seems like the first hour was slow and laggy but the second half was 2x the speed LOL. They rushed them through swimsuit and gown.
Contestants who I hope to see at USA are New York, California (she will impress the judges with her education), Oklahoma, Kansas (I have a feeling Trump likes her), Maryland, Mississippi (she looked really pretty in the intros), and some other contestants.
Despite some production issues though, hard to admit Miss America is getting more publicity than Miss USA. Ratings are not just high (really surprised at the numbers btw) but the CONTROVERSY over Nina's win. This controversy is generating lots of publicity and will no doubt promote Miss America for the time being.
On a ending note, I hope Miss Universe will change the format somewhat and hopefully generate high ratings.
Please feel free to comment.
