Here are some historical records achieved this year:
1. Hong Kong wins its fourth title. This is their shortest gap in between wins.
2. Hawaii achieves their highest placement at the pageant. The Island has never reached the top 5 before, with their best placement being top 10 in 1995 and 2018.
3. New York records their third 2nd RU. The Big Apple is the closest city to achieve a third-peat as Vancouver's best run was a top 5 placement in 2006 (kudos to Crystal Li as she stood till the end!). New York currently matches Hong Kong for the best running top 3 streak with five placements (Hong Kong placed in the top 2 for five years in 1988-1993).
4. London records their highest placement in the pageant. The city has only placed once in the semifinals before (2012).
5. Tahiti places in the top 5 for the first time. This is also their highest placement in MCI as the city has only placed twice before (1992 and 1996).
6. Chicago places for the first time since Kelly Cheung's win in 2012. Interestingly, Kelly was one of the judges this year.
7. Los Angeles places for the second year in a row. The last time this happened was 2013-2015. Since returning in 2013, the city has placed on five out of seven occasions.
8. Meizhou makes its debut and places. It extends Mainland's China streak in the semifinals to four years.
9. Melbourne places for the first time since 2015. Finola is Australia's only semifinalist, preventing an Aussie shutout for the second year in a row.
10. Vancouver places in the semifinals but does not advance to the top 5 for the first time since 2007!! The Canadian powerhouse usually places in the top 5 or misses out entirely in recent years. The chain of 3 year wins starting in 2001 (with a break in 2007) has been broken again. I am pretty confident though that if the right girl comes, the city will win again (just like any other city should).
11. Bangkok fails to place for the first time since 2010! Thailand was not represented last year.
12. Other interesting trends that I noticed is that Brisbane (who has competed in many editions before) is yet to place in MCI. Send us a semifinalist Brisbane!
13. Kuala Lumpur surprisingly does not advance to the top 10. The stunner was considered a favorite to win the pageant. Maybe the contract dispute between TVB and Astro played a role?
14. Toronto does not place in the top 10 for the first time since 2012. Hopefully Fairchild can recruit a competitive batch of contestants this year and send a contender to the pageant next year! The last time Toronto arguably had a chance at winning the title was with Candy Chang in 2010.
Interestingly, a lot of pageant watchers overlooked Hawaii and London's success as a lot of attention was placed on Tahiti. I guess this has to do with the language disadvantage Tahiti has (most reps. are native French speakers) and how Hawaii and London was favored to do well this year. All of the ladies deserve recognition. Congratulations to all!
